What is Clean Eating?

The general idea around clean eating is basing your diet on consuming primarily whole, unprocessed foods whenever possible. And it’s a spectrum. On one side is super processed fast food and on the other side is organic fruits & vegetables. And although everyone can implement clean eating differently, some include animal products some don’t etc, the general idea is to consume as much as you can from the clean food side, and avoid as much as possible the dirty food side. And as a bonus, clean eating for weight loss.

Eating clean revolves around maintaining a balanced and personalized diet of fresh food such as fruit, vegetables, whole grains, grass fed meat & fish, healthy fats and some organic diary.

So What Are The Benefits Of Eating Clean?

A clean eating lifestyle can lead to the following health benefits:

  • More energy
  • Weight loss or easy weight maintenance
  • Clearer skin
  • Stronger hair & nails
  • Improved mood & focus
  • Better sleep

And it’s not a diet.

It’s a lifestyle.

Does that mean that when you decide to eat clean you never have an ice cream or a chocolate bar again?

Definitely not.

But you will find as you keep making choices from the clean end of the spectrum you feel less and less like incorporating the dirty foods.

You become more in touch with what foods make you feel good and what foods make you feel bad. Your body starts to help you out. And clean eating for weight loss is a benefit of this. Your body starts to crave the foods that nourish it rather than the foods that drain it and it becomes easier to make the right choices for you.

Not for anyone else but what’s right for you.

No counting calories, no counting macros, no avoiding whole food groups. Just eating what feels good for your body from as close to the clean side as you can!

So what are the basic principles around eating clean?

1. Keep it Real

Stick to whole foods. So foods that occur in nature and don’t go through a lab or factory. So fresh fruit or vegetables, grass fed & free-range meats, organic diary, whole grains such as quinoa, brown rice & millet, nuts and seeds.

2. Get Cooking

When you cook for yourself you are generally increasing the nutritional value of your food. So get in the kitchen and keep it simple. Cooking doesn’t have to be hard or time-consuming.

3. Start to Crowd Out Dirty Foods

As you start to add in more and more nourishing foods you will start to crowd out the dirty foods naturally. However when you’re starting out, where possible start to eliminate white foods.

No I’m not talking about cauliflower.

You want to avoid energy suckers like white sugar and white flour. So start to reduce sugary desserts, white pasta, rice, bread and pastries by replacing it with brown rice, whole grain sprouted breads, brown rice pasta, quinoa, millet & amaranth.

4. Maintain Blood Sugar Balance

Keeping your blood sugar stable not only keeps you feeling happier and more able to make decisions throughout your day. But it also makes it easier to make healthy food choices.

When you have too much processed sugar or you go too long between meals you may experience a crash in energy which makes you much more likely to go for the donut or cookie with your next coffee. Your blood sugar then surges and drops even faster making you feel irritable and tired. So eating whole foods and bringing healthy snacks with you to avoid these situations and help your blood sugar remain stable.

5. Fat is your Friend

For too long fat was the enemy however healthy fats not only help you feel satiated and give you energy but are essential for healthy cells and a healthy brain.

Healthy fats to include are coconut oils, avocado, olive oil, grass fed meat, nuts and seeds and grass fed butter.

6. Quality over Quantity

Not all calories are created equal. Food is information for your body and 100 calories of donut are not processed the same way in your body as 100 calories of apple. Also when you stick to wholefoods you are more likely to effortless keep your caloric intake at an appropriate level for your body.

Three or four cookies are much easier to eat than three or four apples right?

Whole foods actually fill you up and fuel you for longer whereas foods such as candy or potato chips fill a mental craving maybe but don’t nourish or satisfy your body. These foods also mess with the hormones in your body that let you know you’re full. Meaning it’s easy to eat more than you need. Whole foods on the other hand keep the systems within your body working optimally which means your body will let you know when you have had enough.

No calorie counting required.

Also high fiber whole foods like fruit and vegetables keep the digestive system in shape, which is so essential for optimal energy and health.

Real Food, Real Energy

Eating whole foods ensure you get adequate amounts of essential nutrients your body needs for all the biochemical reactions essential for optimal energy levels. Whole foods boast incredible nutrition profiles that are readily absorbed by your body. Sure you could pop vitamins for each of the nutrients you need but these are much more easily absorbed when consumed through food.

I like to think of clean eating as a form of self-care. You’re taking care of yourself by feeding yourself beautiful nourishing food. When you eat real food you feel great and you are more able to move through your days with joy & ease, creating and nurturing supportive relationships and a career you love.
