Health coaching is a relatively new profession and so I often get asked what exactly is a health coach and what does a health coach do?
Let me start with a question.
Why do you do what you do when you know what you know?
From time to time we all experience a gap between knowing what we have to do and actually doing it. Health coaches help people cross that gap in regards to their health and wellness. So to make it simple I help people change their habits in a way that helps them reach their health goals, have more energy and become healthier and happier. I help them find the motivation and tools to get to where they want to be.
That’s just one of the reasons I love my job!!
A health coach is also different to a nutritionist, a dietician and a personal trainer.
A nutritionist can prescribe specific diet and supplement protocols and has generally completed a degree in nutrition. A dietician can diagnose and treat diseases with diet and may work in hospitals and private practice. Both of these depending on your country are strictly regulated and generally must follow standard guidelines such as the Australian Dietary Guidelines.
A personal trainer generally focuses on exercise and can run group classes or personal training sessions however some do further nutrition training and then can add meal plans and recipe ideas to their programs.
A health coach cannot diagnose, treat or prescribe so if you have a serious health concern I will be quick to refer you to the appropriate professional.
However a health coach can help you with motivation and support to:
- Boost confidence and improve your health
- Lose weight
- Improve your digestion and reduce symptoms of gastrointestinal distress
- Improve your nutrition and eating habits
- Improve your sleep
- Increase your energy
- Get moving more
- Reduce your stress and the impact of stress
- Crush food cravings
- Improve your families health habits
- Learn how to cook healthy and tasty food
- Improve mindfulness
Health coaches also empower people to believe that they have what it takes to succeed. It’s having someone on your side with you on your health journey, rather than someone telling you what to do. They help their clients find the motivation and tools to get to their physical and emotional health goals.
According to the Institute of Integrative Nutrition (where I studied) “A Health Coach is a supportive mentor and wellness authority who works with clients to help them feel their best through food and lifestyle changes. Instead of prescribing one diet or way of exercising, Health Coaches tailor individualized wellness programs to meet their clients’ needs”
One of the things I help people do is change their habits around food. I help people retrain their tastebuds and their brain to develop sustainable habits that will stick. My clients are often amazed that they can get to a point where they actually want to make the healthy choices; it doesn’t feel like such a struggle anymore. They stop craving sugar and don’t feel the need to eat it, even when it’s in front of them.
Food, diet and lifestyle information is totally confusing! There are always new fad diets coming out and new experts telling us what you eat and when and making behavioural change is tough! A health coach provides the support, education and accountability needed to help you make changes that stick. Positive health habits have a flow on affect to all other aspects of your life such as how you show up for your work, family and relationships.
Todays medical model is all about disease management whereas health coaches are focused on disease prevention and helping your body thrive through lifestyle strategies specific to your current health conditions and lifestyle. Health coaches also look at the whole picture, all the aspects of your life that affect your health.
We all have aspects of our health that we could improve even health coaches and support and accountability are sometimes the missing link to meeting our goals.
You don’t have to get there all by yourself.
So how did I get into health coaching?
Well, six years ago I got tired of obsessing over food, yo-yo dieting, always feeling low on energy, and never truly loving my body no matter what I tried. It was a vicious circle.
Being tired or low energy makes you want to eat comfort food but often comfort foods don’t give your body the fuel it needs so you end up back where you started over and over. But, there’s a better way. You don’t have to overhaul your lifestyle or make promises to yourself about it “all starting on Monday”.
I became passionate about teaching people what I had learnt about how to lose weight and get boundless energy without stressful diets, massive changes, or restricting entire food groups. I figured it out and I want to share with you my step-by-step approach to finding food freedom AND reaching your health goals.
It is possible to live life in a body you love!
Together with my clients we investigate all their body’s signals which may be rashes, pains, gases, 3pm crashes, energy slumps or any other number of weird and wonderful signs to help them feel your best and get your energy back to where it should be.
We will also work on smashing your health goals, whether they are to lose weight, take control of your cravings or run a marathon.
To your health,
