Your Perception of Stress

What if it’s not actually your job, lack of time, business, kids, family, project or even health that’s stressing you out?

What if it’s just perceived stress? What if it’s actually your perception of these things in your life that causes you to feel stressed or anxious?

Now I can hear you already.

Karen, you don’t understand.

You don’t know what it’s like.

You don’t have my boss or my job or my family.

OK OK hear me out. I know that what I’m about to say is easier said than done. I have struggled with anxiety since I was a teenager. But realizing and being aware of the fact that the only thing I actually have control over is how I react to a given situation, actually helps a lot!

Dealing with perceived stress can be a little tough. You may not be faced with difficult situations very often but how you feel about the situation and how you handle the stressors around you is extremely important.

So lets say you are feeling stressed out because work is crazy busy at the moment. You have too many projects on the go and you’re totally stretched between work and your family commitments. You have too many emails, too many phone calls to make and too many people competing for your time! So you wake up in the morning feeling totally stressed about the day ahead.


You wake up in the morning excited to get stuck into all the projects you have going on at work at the moment. With all the redundancies going round at the moment you feel grateful that not only do you have a job but also multiple fulfilling projects on the go. You hate feeling bored and so every email, every phone call is another opportunity. You also have a family that loves spending time with you and so although it can be tricky to balance your time, how lucky are you that have too much awesome stuff to do with your life.

How do you deal with perceived stress? Next time you feel stressed out about a particular situation, see if you can take a few minutes and just see if it’s possible to switch up your perception of the situation. I’m not saying I manage to do this every time I get stressed out. But the times that I do bring some awareness to my perception of the situation, always diffuses the anxiety and makes me smile.

Maybe my day isn’t going to be so bad after all.


Stress and perceived stress is a modern day epidemic. I feel like the perception today is if you’re not busy & stressed, you’re not working hard enough.
